At SMC, we believe that music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. At SMC, the objectives from The National Curriculum alongside our chosen scheme, Charanga, form the teaching of Music. Charanga meets The National Curriculum expectations and the new scheme, which we have adopted in years 1-6, also takes into account the recent release of the government’s Model Music Curriculum. In Reception, the original scheme will be followed with a focus on learning nursery rhymes and action songs. Charanga covers all aspects of listening and responding, exploring and creating, singing and sharing and performing. Children at SMC will experience a range of different musical genres including pop, classical, rock and hip-hop. Children will be given the opportunity to appraise music across a broad musical spectrum.
To promote a love of music and the Catholic ethos of the school, each week every child comes together in the hall for a Celebration of Song assembly in addition to their in class Music lessons.
Throughout the school year, there will be opportunities for children to perform in front of an audience and we aim for every child to be confident in sharing their talents with others.
