At St. Margaret Clitherow’s, we are passionate about delivering an Art and Design curriculum that engages, inspires and challenges every child. We aim to nurture creativity and imagination while equipping pupils with the skills to experiment, invent and create their own unique works of art. We really do believe that, ‘Every child is an artist.’ ~ Pablo Picasso
Our curriculum is carefully designed in line with the National Curriculum, ensuring that pupils develop a rich and progressive understanding of key artistic techniques and vocabulary.
From the earliest years through to Upper Key Stage 2, pupils build on prior knowledge and develop their understanding of key concepts and techniques. They learn to use a range of materials creatively, develop techniques in drawing, painting and sculpture, and create sketchbooks to record their observations and ideas.
As they progress, children are encouraged to improve their mastery of art and design techniques and to evaluate and refine their work using appropriate subject-specific vocabulary. Children are taught to use and understand terms such as colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space and apply these confidently when creating and discussing their work.
Our curriculum also ensures that all pupils explore how art reflects and shapes history, as well as how it contributes to the culture, creativity and diversity of communities locally, nationally and globally. Children study a range of significant artists, designers and craft makers, developing the language needed to analyse and discuss their work with confidence.
