Celebrating Earth Day at SMC
This year, our school community came together to celebrate Earth Day with a wide range of creative, thoughtful, and hands-on activities designed to inspire environmental awareness and responsibility across all year groups.
In Nursery, our youngest learners explored colour and creativity by using their handprints in earthy tones to form a beautiful lightbulb shape, symbolising bright ideas for a sustainable future.
Reception children engaged in sensory learning by creating their own model of the Earth using cotton wool and cress seeds in the tuff tray. They also enjoyed planting a variety of seeds—including lettuce, carrots, and flowers—in our EYFS planters, beginning their journey of understanding how we grow and care for living things.
Year 1 pupils designed Earth Day posters, sharing simple and effective ways we can help the planet at home. They also worked collaboratively to produce a shared poster for the school, took part in a PE activity focused on cleaning up our environment, and created mandalas using natural materials. In addition, they made personal pledges and designed energy- and water-saving posters for both classroom display and home use.
Year 2 children developed their observation skills through nature journaling. They carefully sketched insects, leaves, and flowers, using watercolours to bring their work to life. They also created posters for each classroom to serve as visual reminders to switch off lights and save energy.
Year 3 explored the natural environment by collecting materials from the playground and field to create detailed nature collages, encouraging appreciation for the world around them.
Year 4 pupils focused on the theme of “power.” Each child designed a square representing a form of power, which were then combined into a striking patchwork display. This collaborative piece highlighted how small individual actions can come together to create meaningful change. They also constructed models from recycled materials to demonstrate simple ways we can protect our planet.
Year 5 students created vibrant mosaic artwork using recycled bottle tops. They also designed imaginative “renewable energy islands” and paintings that conveyed powerful messages about reducing pollution and protecting nature.
Year 6 took on a practical role in promoting sustainability across the school by designing light switch reminder posters for every classroom, encouraging everyone to turn off lights and conserve energy.
Our Earth Day celebrations showcased not only creativity and teamwork but also a shared commitment to caring for our environment. Through these activities, our pupils developed a deeper understanding of how their actions—no matter how small—can make a positive difference to the world around them.
Earth Day SMC in Bloom
To mark Earth Day, pupils across the school took part in a range of meaningful outdoor activities, working together to care for and enhance our school environment.
Our Nursery children enjoyed planting new flowers in the nursery garden, helping to brighten their outdoor space while learning about how plants grow and thrive.
In Reception, pupils worked hard to weed and prepare the EYFS garden before planting a selection of new flowers. Their efforts have already begun to transform the area into a vibrant and welcoming space.
Year 1 continued this important work by weeding and planting flowers in the KS1 planters, taking pride in maintaining and improving their shared environment.
Year 2 and Year 3 pupils collaborated to weed the quad garden outside the Year 3 classrooms. Their teamwork has prepared the area for new planting, which will take place in the near future.
Meanwhile, pupils in Years 4, 5 and 6 focused on the hedgerow, carefully weeding the area and preparing it for the addition of fresh mulch in the coming weeks. This work will help support healthy plant growth and improve the overall appearance of the space.
Over the next few weeks, each class will continue to contribute by planting a variety of beautiful flowers around the school as part of our “SMC in Bloom” initiative. This ongoing project reflects our shared commitment to caring for our environment and creating a colourful, thriving school community.
