At SMC, our geography curriculum supports children to make sense of the world around them and piques their curiosity in places and people. We want children to begin to understand the diversity and complexity of the world they live in and become nurturing global citizens who understand their place in the world and recognise the importance of all of God’s creations.
Children’s geographical understanding is developed through a coherently planned curriculum of geographical knowledge and skills. Beginning in EYFS, children are guided to make sense of their physical world and their community. Children’s knowledge and understanding of the world is developed with the other six areas of learning to prepare them for the Y1 curriculum.
Throughout Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, children’s geographical understanding is further developed through the explicit teaching of core knowledge and geographical skills. Learning is connected, cumulative and coherent so children are able to apply the knowledge and skills they have been taught to secure learning and grow into geographical thinkers.
