In our increasingly diverse world the learning of other languages promotes not only communication but also knowledge, tolerance and respect towards others. It allows us to understand and collaborate, therefore creating opportunities for us to learn with and from each other.

At St Margaret Clitherow’s we aim to develop our pupils’ awareness and respect for other people, communities and cultures, celebrating the wonders of diversity and how we all fit together. We believe that learning a language enriches pupils personally and socially, as well as academically. It challenges and inspires them, fosters their curiosity and prepares them to engage and succeed in our multicultural society. We aim to instil a positive attitude and a love of languages and learning itself, in order to develop strong foundations for future education and lifelong learning.

At St Margaret Clitherow’s our chosen language is French. Through our curriculum we develop the children’s confidence and skills in using the language both orally and in writing. Our curriculum is planned and sequenced to enable progression, allowing the children to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding as they move through Key Stage 2. We aim to make learning fun, engaging and supportive so that it is enjoyable and accessible for all of our pupils. This helps to ensure that every child can succeed and make progress in their learning. Where appropriate, links are also made with other subjects and areas of learning to support and reinforce concepts and skills.

At St Margaret Clitherow’s we have chosen to use the ‘Language Angels‘ online scheme to support our teaching of French. Through our carefully chosen sequence of units for each year group we are able to ensure progression in learning as well as full coverage of the requirements of the National Curriculum. The scheme promotes the teaching of all four of the key aspects of language-learning – speaking, listening, reading and writing – and supports the delivery of the content through engaging activities, resources and useful materials.
