At Saint Margaret Clitherow’s Primary School, we recognise the importance of Science in every aspect of daily life. As one of the core subjects, we give the teaching and learning of Science the prominence it requires and are committed to providing a stimulating, engaging and challenging learning environment.

We want our children to be naturally curious about the world around them whilst acquiring specific skills and knowledge to help them to think scientifically, to gain an understanding of scientific processes and an understanding of the uses and implications of Science, today and for the future.

Throughout our school, pupils will acquire and develop the key knowledge that has been identified within each unit and across each year group.  Scientific enquiry skills are embedded in each topic the children study and these topics are revisited and developed throughout their time at school so that they can apply their knowledge of science when using equipment, conducting experiments, building arguments and explaining concepts confidently and continue to ask questions and be curious about their surroundings.

As a result of this, we aim to deliver a curriculum which is not only accessible to all but will also maximise the outcomes for every child so that they know more, remember more and understand more.

We aim to ensure that all children:

  • develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics;
  • develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of Science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them;
  • be equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of Science, today and for the future.
  • develop an enthusiasm and enjoyment of scientific learning and discovery.
