Following our school mission – that we love and protect ourselves and others – works of charity are central to life at SMC. We know that Jesus teaches us to put the needs of others first – especially those in greatest need – and that this is reflected in the Catholic Social Teaching value, Preferential Option for the Poor.
Throughout the year, we support a variety of charities that are close to our hearts. Our children are always so enthusiastic in their efforts and have brilliant ideas for ways we can help others – not only through raising money but actions too. Our families are always generous in their support of the various campaigns in school.
Mission Together

SMC has a long history of supporting the Bishop’s request of primary schools supporting the charity Mission Together whose tagline is ‘Children Helping Children’. Each year, during Lent, as part of our almsgiving, the Mini Vinnies sort the familiar red boxes which are sent home for families to collect coins and bring in. SMC is proud to have been recognised as one of the most regular and generous donators from the Diocese of Middlesbrough.
Macmillan Coffee Morning
Every September, SMC hosts a huge coffee morning, raising money for Macmillan whose work is so very important in caring for those with cancer and their families. We also remember to hold these people in prayer. The coffee morning is always well-attended by our families who are extremely generous in their donations of baked goods and financial support. This year, through the generosity of our families, parish and wider SMC community, we raised a staggering £1095.45! Thank you, everyone!
Food Bank
In Autumn, we praise God for Creation and give thanks for the gifts of the harvest. As part of our thanksgiving, we recognise the need to share what we have with those in greatest need. It never fails to astound us how generous the SMC family is in the support of donations of food, toiletries and other goods as part of our harvest collection for the local food bank. Our Mini Vinnies gave regular reminders to help us remember to bring in our tins and packets. The food collected was blessed by Canon Loughlin as a sign of our love for others.
Zoe’s Place
Our local charity, based in the old Crossbeck Convent in Eston, is Zoe’s Place – a baby and young children’s hospice. We know how precious these children are and how special the work is that the staff there do. This summer, following their RE work about supporting our local community, Year 2 ran an ice pop stall. As always, this was wonderfully supported and just what we needed in the July sunshine – even our busy builders!
